Constitution

Definition, Aims and Objectives

I. We are the Islamic society of Goldsmiths, University of London; a charitable, religious, social and cultural society, representative of all Muslims within this institution.
II. Our belief centres around the oneness of God, and the teachings of His final messenger, Muhammad peace be upon him.
III. We are a non partisan group, who do not adhere to any sect or any understanding that deviate away from the original Islamic traditions.
IV. Our aims are primarily to cater for the needs of the Muslim students and to engage positively with the local community based on the principles of Islam.

Administration

V. The society will be administered by a body made up of a President, Vice President, Sisters Representative (with appointed Deputies), Secretary and Treasurer. This body will work to ensure smooth running of the Society.
VI. The administrative body must ensure that the society is observant of Students Union regulations and also have regular consultation with senior members, alumni as well as reputable scholars.
VII. This body will be selected after a process of open nomination.
VIII. The administration must adhere to Islamic principle of amanah (trust) and carry out their duties to the best of their ability.
IX. The President is ultimately responsible for the overall management of the society and will be a focal point for the Society.
X. The Vice President will support the President in his role, and also be in charge of prayer and all related issues.
XI. The Sister’s Representative (and Deputies) will raise issues from sisters directly to the President, and be responsible for making teams and delegating tasks in the sisters section of the society.
XII. The Secretary is in charge of all communications and is responsible for maintaining relationships with all external organisations.
XIII. The Treasurer is responsible for all accounts and finances of the Islamic Society and must provide regular updates to the members.

Membership

XIV. We are open to all people of all backgrounds for membership.

Meetings, Voting Rights, Complaints

XV. All Muslim students are entitled to one vote in meetings, with the president granted a full right of veto.
XVI. The administration reserves the right to bar any member from participating in meetings, if they are found to be contradicting Islamic teachings or otherwise bringing the society in disrepute.
XVII. Minutes must be taken of all meetings and must be made publicly available.
XVIII. The Society must hold at least two general meetings during the year, with a minimum of 2 members of the administration and 3 members being present to pass any motion.
XIX. All complaints must be directed to the President, who must respond within reasonable time.
XX. The Society’s and President’s e-mails must be available publicly.
XXI. The President must ensure that there is active representation in Students Union meetings.

Amendments, Interpretation

XXII. This constitution can be amended with the approval of the former president and with the consensus of the members by vote.
XXIII. This constitution can only be interpreted by using an ‘Interpretation’ of the Constitution, which is by consensus of the Administration, former president or the local reputable scholars.
